Veterinary Acupuncture at North Maclean Family Vet

North Maclean Family Vets is very excited to be able to offer a new service for our patients: Veterinary Acupuncture!

Dr Anna has trained in this treatment modality and, with a post-graduate Diploma qualification, is looking forward to being able to help more of our North Maclean family.

Who can benefit from Veterinary Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has a history stretching back for millenia, and has a wide range of applications in veterinary medicine. Well known for chronic and acute pain relief, it can also be a useful aid in the treatment of conditions as varied as renal failure, constipation, neurological conditions, recovery from injury and more.

What happens during a treatment session? Will my pet feel the needles?

Dr Anna will discuss your concerns regarding your pet and take a thorough and holistic history, and perform a full clinical exam. She will take the time to put your pet at ease and get them comfortably settled.

Acupuncture needles are very slender and very sharp, most pets will accept them without fuss. We keep the needles in for around 10-15 minutes—time for lots of smooches and pats, or maybe a bit of a pet massage!

Your pet may feel sleepy after their session. Some are so relaxed they fall asleep during their treatment.

How often will my pet need treatment?

That depends on the condition. Generally, we will start off with weekly visits, and then as things improve we can reduce how often we need to see the patient. Some pets with chronic conditions will benefit from ongoing visits, often every 4-6 weeks.

If my pet has acupuncture, will they still need “normal” vet visits?

Acupuncture is a tried and tested complementary therapy, but it does not remove the need for an accurate medical diagnosis or regular veterinary checkups. Each patient is different, and therapies need to be tailored to suit the individual.
