Single use plastic and waste is a topic frequently seen in the news and social media. Large amounts of plastic waste are created by the medical and veterinary industry as a result of improvements in hygiene and sterility.
At North Maclean Family Vet, we are committed to reducing our contribution to waste, without compromising the care of our patients. In order to provide good hygiene, and avoid contamination and infection, some items must be single-use only and must be discarded. However, we aim to collect and recycle all soft plastics that are not biologically contaminated. We aim to reduce our paper use by focusing on email and text communications.

We are now stocking Elizabethan collars (also known as E collars, buckets, lamp shades, cone of shame) that are made out of 80% recycled plastic, and can be recycled once finished using in your normal household recycling!!
These collars have a wavy edge, and sport an image of a large tree to identify their sustainability. We are all so excited to be able to use these and hope you will be too!
We have partnered with Sustainable Salons, who now allow us to recycle all uncontaminated fur and plastics! All fur is turned into Hair booms and hair dirt. All of our plastics are recycled into pot plants or dog leashes!
Here are some excerpts from their website: https://sustainablesalons.org/
Synthetic booms and chemical dispersants cause damaging long term side effects on the environment.
Hair booms however, are an organic alternative that’s even more effective at soaking up oil. A standard boom can soak up to 4L of oil and can even be drained and reused up to two more times. Talk about the power of hair!
We’ve done our research
Sustainable Salons partnered with industry leaders, enrich360 and ACE Solutions, to unearth the full potential of recycled hair as an additive material in fertiliser. The results exceeded expectations finding that “human hair is a safe and pathogen-free compost material. The balanced level of micro & macro nutrients supports beneficial bacteria and enhances yield.”
Yep, hair holds valuable nutrients like amino acids, nitrogen, calcium and iron that supercharges soil into a high grade fertiliser!
